They Did A Song With Who?

I've always been a sucker for when bands collaborate with other artists. I know some people hate it - my mum likes about 1 in every 100 collabs - but I thought for those of you who do love it I'd show you some of my favourite collabs. And maybe for you cynics out there you may find one you like? Also it's probably worth mentioning that I LOVE suggestions.

All Time Low - Remembering Sunday
Featuring - Juliet Simms (Automatic Loveletter)

"I've done something so terrible, i'm terrified to speak but you'd expect that from me"

When the album "So Wrong, It's Right" was first released I thought that Juliet being on one of the songs would make her more known to the world and her fan base would expand. However, this didn't really happen and only now 5 years after the release is her incredible voice known after coming second place on The Voice.  The song itself is a slow acoustic number that is one of the fan favourites. Juliet's part of the song has been performed numerous times over the years by just about every other female vocalist out there but no one can do it quite like she does - effortlessly beautiful.

Anavae - This Light
Featuring - Arthur Walwin

"Have we all felt something we're never meant to feel. Don't leave it in the dark just tell me where to start."

Both of these artists are relatively unknown but each deserves masses of attention. Compared to other music by Anavae "This Light" is pretty different. Ditching the heavy guitars and drums they opted for a quieter more intricate sound with Arthur joining Becca in singing what is essentially a breathtaking song.

Arthur Walwin - Wisteria Lane Poker Club
Featuring - AJ Perdomo (The Dangerous Summer)

"So take me and help me up cause i'm falling and I need you to believe in me again."

Arthur himself has collaborated with AJ Perdomo on one of his own songs. A bonus track on his EP "For One More Night" the song showcases how amazing his song writing skills are as well as his stunning voice.

The Dangerous Summer - Disconnect
Featuring - Alex Gaskarth (All Time Low)

"I'm afraid of all the nightmares that came true."

I'm not purposely going in circles, I swear. Back from their 2007 EP "If You Could Only Keep Me Alive" the harmonies provided by Alex compliment AJ's with charm.

A Day To Remember - If It Means A Lot To You
Featuring - Sierra Kusterbeck (VersaEmerge)

"I swear i'll never be happy again and don't you dare say we can just be friends."

Sierra's luscious voice makes this song so enchanting I find it hard to believe there is anyone out there who doesn't like it.

A Loss For Words - Finite (Acoustic)
Featuring - Taylor Jardine (We Are The In Crowd)

"Until the hand of fate takes it away we're staring life right in the face."

I can't think of the words to describe just how much I love this song. Just know that I really really really really love it. Like a lot.

Set Your Goals - The Few That Remain
Featuring - Hayley Williams (Paramore)

"You instilled, helped to build a belief within me that I carry to this day. You passed the torch and cared no more. What a shame. Who's to blame when the mighty fall from grace?"

This song should be one of everyone's favourites. With brutally honest and thoughtful lyrics with music that feels empowering and what can only be described as rapping from Hayley.

Tonight Alive - Thank You And Goodnight
Featuring - Mark Hoppus (Blink-182)

"I think you all look the same, but who's blaming you? Well I know that you can't help it."

One of the punkier tracks from TA's debut album "What Are You So Scared Of?" with vocals from the one and only stupendous Mark Hoppus.

Transit - All Your Heart
Featuring - Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy)

"You made me into a monster so I made you into art and I gave it to the world to rip and tear apart."

Transit write music that is equally beautiful, ingenious and something else entirely. The addition of Patrick Stump on this song makes it even more wonderful.

Yellowcard - Here I Am Alive
Featuring - Taylor Jardine (We Are The In Crowd)

"Someone's gonna tell you who you should wanna be, so you forget the vision that they didn't want to see."

Another one of those songs that gives you food for thought and speaks nothing but truth.

Gig Moments I Never Want To Forget (Part 3)

11. The Easycore Tour (Bristol 27/11/2008)

New Found Glory, Set Your Goals, Four Year Strong and Crime In Stereo. Surely that's enough said?

12. Being on barrier for Bayside (Birmingham 2/12/2008)

It was at this show I first heard Hit The Lights and was on the barrier for the first time ever. It was after going to a few more gigs I realised I actually would rather be in the crowd than on barrier but it was pretty awesome being directly in front of the Bayside guys. It was a seriously good show and I haven't managed to see them since which is something that needs to be changed pretty sharpish.

13. A Day To Remember and the non-mover student (Bristol 13/03/2010)

I went to see ADTR at the university and so I was surrounded by giant students flailing around, apart from this one guy that smelt like he hadn't washed in a good year and didn't move a muscle throughout the entire gig. I'm pretty sure he didn't blink either. Actually I don't think he even knew where he was.

14. Jack Barakat waving to us on the balcony (Bristol 26/01/2010)

All Time Low's first tour in the UK was a brilliant one. The set was almost the same as it was on "Straight To DVD" minus a couple of songs, and if they ever wanted to stop making music, a career as comedians wouldn't be hard to come by for them. I was ill at this gig and spent most of the night trying not to throw up but it didn't dampen my spirits as All Time Low really do know how to cheer someone up. Towards the end of the night Jack waved up to me and my dad - possibly All Time Low's biggest fan - and yelled hello which made my night. 2 years later and i've met them a few times and will be seeing them live for the 5th time in February.

15. My sister's hamster dying during "The Only Exception" (Birmingham 16/11/2010)

This was the second time seeing Paramore live and during "The Only Exception" I gave my phone to Meg to use as a light when a load of text messages came through saying "Skippy's dying" and then "Skippy's dead". The guy next to us looked quite alarmed when he read the messages over her shoulder too. It was one of those moments where I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
I also got the whole thing on video but it refuses to upload so watch the one above and know that somewhere in the crowd that's happening.

Gig Moments I Never Want To Forget (Part 2)

6. Seeing Brand New and Jesse launching himself off stage (Cardiff 17/02/2012)

I've loved and worshipped Brand New for a long time and all I wanted was to see them live. The opportunity came about and I was so excited. They honestly did not disappoint. Their set was intense and apart from Soco they played every song I could of wanted. Usually I don't like being on barrier but it made it 100 times better this time. It was also the last show of the tour so in a drunken and dramatic manner they smashed up their guitars and offered them to us. Security were boring bastards though and stopped them (I NEARLY GOT VINCENT'S GUITAR DAMMIT). Ahem. Then Jesse launched himself off stage into the crowd and when I say launched I mean it - he ended up near the back. Once he was back on stage he jumped into the drum kit which looked, uh, rather painful. Bloody nutters.

7. Blink-182 "Wasting Time" and "Reckless Abandon" acoustic (Cardiff 10/07/2012)

Again with Blink-182 i've been listening to them for longer than I can even remember and so when they announced they were getting back together and touring the UK I was insanely happy. Then when it sold out and my brother had tickets and I didn't I genuinely sobbed on the floor for a good hour. However, as luck would have it my brother and his friend made the ridiculous mistake as to give me their tickets. Hallefuckinglujah. I had to babysit my sister at the gig which was a huge pain in the ass as she isn't good with crowds but would never admit it, so when we got near the front and Blink came on, the crowd went crazy and she looked like she was going to pass out. I had to drag her to the back which was easier said than done and then I couldn't get back in the crowd. This did have its perks though. Halfway through the night Tom and Mark came to the back and played "Wasting Time" and "Reckless Abandon" acoustically and I was at the front for this. The crowd sang along more content than ever. And not to be forgotten about was Travis'drum solo afterwards which went above and beyond on the epic scale.

8. We Are The In Crowd (Reading 2012)

I had seen We Are The In Crowd 3 times before they played Reading and so if I missed them I didn't think I would be gutted. But, I did manage to see them and I can safely say if I had missed them I would have been seriously annoyed. I don't quite know what it was, in fact I don't think it was any one thing, but they were incredible. The tent was full, with people spilling out the sides, which was the first surprise and then they were all singing along to the songs - and not just the ones Radio 1 had whored out - jumping around and the few people who looked sceptical at the beginning soon seemed impressed too. They were playing their instruments better than ever seeming more punk than pop for once and the vocals were the best i've heard from Tay and Jordan. I'm not even ashamed to admit I was so proud of them I cried.

9. The Maine's Pat Kirch celebrates his birthday (Yeovil 1/02/2012)

The show coincided with drummer Pat's birthday. Instead of us just singing happy birthday to him we had to demand the cake to be thrown into the crowd and so of course they did just that. The floor became a spongy slippery cakey mess and more than once I nearly went flying across the mosh pit. After the show Pat informed us it was a Tinkerbell cake. Brilliant.

10. Mayday Parade play "Miserable At Best" and "Stay" (Cardiff 13/10/2012)

I made a huge post about this gig before but getting to see these 2 songs live was perfect. They're beautiful tear jerkers and there wasn't a dry eye in the audience.

Gig Moments I Never Want To Forget (Part 1)

Over the past few years I've been to some pretty amazing gigs and so over the next few days i'm going to be bringing to you some of my favourite moments and performances I've witnessed. There are sad moments, funny ones and simply epic as well as the gross. Be prepared.

1. All Time Low covering Blink-182's "All The Small Things" (Bristol 30/01/2012)

During the sound check the crowd sang along to the legendary pop-punk tune "All The Small Things" by the Kings of the genre Blink-182. However, I don't think there was anyone in the crowd that actually expected All Time Low to cover the song themselves that night. As soon as the crowd clocked the song, that was it. Everyone had their hands up, feet bouncing off the ground as we screamed along to one of the most memorable moments of our gig-going lives.

2. Getting peed on and falling over during Two Door Cinema Club (Reading 2012)

I did warn you that some of these were just going to be gross. If you've seen my reading post then you'll already know about this but I have to mention it again as honestly I thought it was hilarious. I was boiling hot wearing all my layers of clothes I had brought with me, as I didn't think we were going in the crowd and I had been drinking vodka for a good few hours by this point so saying I was kinda tipsy would be an understatement. It was on the Sunday so everyone was in the same way and so when a bunch of guys decided they just couldn't make it to the loo and peed all down everyone I just laughed. A bunch of girls started freaking out but I just couldn't stop laughing. Anyway, 10 minutes later the same guys were the ones who stopped me being crushed by the mad crowd when we all fell over and I couldn't get up, so instead of getting angry that they peed on me, I made temporary friends with them for saving what really could of been my life.

3. Super Prime cover Fall Out Boy's "Sugar We're Goin Down" (Cardiff 16/04/2012)

If Super Prime wanted a sure way to gain support from new fans that night then they certainly found the best way to do so. Their set had been awesome already and then they played "Sugar We're Goin Down" and my reaction was "oh my fucking god I love them" and proceeded to drag my sister to meet them afterwards and they're genuinely lovely guys. The cover was perfect and the entire crowd seemed impressed.

4. Hayley Williams of Paramore singing "Always Attract" with You Me At Six (Cardiff 16/12/2009)

I actually forgot how beautiful this really was and i'm now sat here in tears but I refuse to close the video. Ah man. Anyway. This was the first time I'd seen either one of the bands live and suddenly the crowd went wild and I couldn't see why. And then I saw this tiny blonde head on stage and I could not believe it. Their voices melded together with such perfection and god just look at them. How far You Me At Six have come since this performance is incredible.

5. Hayley and Josh of Paramore perform "Let This Go" acoustically (Birmingham 14/11/2010)

If you want your heart broken then listen to this.
I don't know what else to say about it.
Because that's what it does.
Break hearts.
And cause a lot of tears.

All I Wanted (Was Your Talent To Be Known)

The music industry is a bizarre mess of music and if you switch on the radio these days you usually get the same old crap playing over and over. Our journey to college last year consisted of the same 6 songs - Titanium, anyone? - playing repeatedly no matter what time of day it was and no matter what radio station we were on, hence why my iPod may as well of been surgically attached to me. The music floating through the airwaves nowadays tends to be 'new music' that has actually existed for a fair amount of time its just taken the radio DJ's ages to jump on the band wagon. Well, its that or they lack severe amounts of honest talent. There's actually one DJ in particular who i've heard 'introduce a brand new band' that has been a band for several years. Finding decent, truly talented musicians takes its time but it is so well worth it. One of the artists that has stolen my heart with his incredible talent is Arthur Walwin
If you haven't read my previous blog about him go and do that now by clicking on the link, as this post is not going to be dedicated to his incredible solo EP music or the bands he has played in but the sheer genius-ness of his 'Walwin Mash-Ups'
Writing an amazing song is one thing, combining two songs from other artists with the original vocals is also a pretty cool talent but Arthur combines songs perfectly and sings them himself.
The way he has achieved this is to such a high standard and so well thought of that I honestly believe if you weren't previously aware they were 2 different songs you wouldn't even be able to tell. He clearly has a skill in picking songs that gel so fluently but which you never thought would. In fact they are so amazing I love them just as much as the original songs.
He is the kind of musician that deserves to be noticed.
Without further ado I would like to introduce you to the perfection:

Starry Eyed Bricks is obviously the combination of Ellie Goulding's Starry Eyed and Paramore's Brick By Boring Brick. Two songs that I never would have put together and yet Arthur does that with style.

All I Wanted Was To Fix You - the gorgeous baby of Paramore's All I Wanted and Coldplay's Fix You - is simply mesmerizing.

Beech Like The Kill comprises of Lower Than Atlantis' Beech Like The Tree and 30 Seconds To Mars' The Kill and comes together with such perfection.

I Write Ignorance, Not Tragedies is the last in the series of mash-ups but by no means the least. Paramore's Ignorance and Panic! At The Disco's I Write Sins, Not Tragedies sounds as though it was always meant to be this way.

But I can't let you go without having heard this piece of musical perfection:

Not technically one of the Walwin Mash-Ups but it does have a cheekily beautiful combination. The main cover is of Go Radio's Goodnight Moon, but ever the heart breaker Arthur has included not only parts of Letters And Love Notes but also of Mayday Parade's Walk On Water Or Drown from Go Radio's Jason Lancaster's days in the band. When I first heard his cover I didn't read the part where he said there's a "cheeky mash-up at the end" and when I heard the "I'll be ok, I'll be just fine" of LALN I teared up a little and then in came the "And everybody knows this is the part" of WOWOD and the next thing I knew I was all out bawling.
It was actually this cover that happened to make my Mum insist that we order his EP "For One More Night" as soon as it goes on sale and talk about how fantastic he is non-stop for a few days.
Clearly he's doing something right.

All of the downloads to these are available in the video description on YouTube.

Why Am I Not One Of You? (Part II)

A month ago I wrote this post about how I realised how much I loved female vocals and I introduced you guys to some of my favourite women who I envy beyond belief. Now, I didn't want to make the list go on forever and ever and so I decided to do it in two parts. Without further ado, the rest of the women who make me ask why am I not you on a daily basis. (I still feel like i'm forgetting about people)

If you don't know who this is then i'm not sure where you've been all your lives as Christina Aguilera is world famous with a world class voice. Starting out young with hits like Beautiful it was obvious she had a big career ahead of her and now she has several albums, has done some acting and is one of the coach's on the US version of The Voice. Whatever your opinion is of her as a person - and i'm sure there are a fair few people who dislike her - I don't think it would be fair to say she can't sing as her vocal range is incredible and every time I hear her sing I just can't work out how she does it. Oh, and she's completely gorgeous.

Jenna McDougall of Australian pop-punk band Tonight Alive has the kind of voice that is flexible to the song she's singing. Across their EP's and their debut album What Are You So Scared Of? you hear her 'angry' voice which is low and gruff and commands your attention whilst simultaneously makes you want to kick someone in the face. As well as that she has a sweet pretty tone that I swear attracts Bambi. Either way the young Aussie band deserves all the attention they can get and with Jenna's adorability rating super high I don't think it's going to be a problem.

Ladyhawke a.k.a Pip Brown is a genius. She plays multiple instruments, writes great music and has a smoky mysterious voice that feels as though you're under a cloud of laid back haze.

Alisa Xayalith of the post-punk synth pop New Zealand band The Naked And Famous has a voice that compliments and contrasts fantastically with the male vocals of Thom Powers who also plays the guitars. Creating notes I didn't think existed Alisa grabs your attention and for all the right reasons.

Lissie plays music that is considered folk and country but don't judge because it's angry and it rocks and so does she.

Regina Spektor has a totally unique voice that sings along to her own lyrics that can be pretty hilarious.

Take Me Back: Mayday Parade 13/10/2012

We arrived in Cardiff an hour and a half before the start of the meet and greet and so we crossed over the bridge to the other side of Cardiff University and sat in Costa where a stream of crew members and Josh Montgomery of The Summer Set came to get their caffeine fix before playing their hearts out on stage. We left at half 5 -fifteen minutes before the meet and greet - and stood outside the venue. Whilst we were waiting Mikey from For The Foxes came and gave us guitar pick necklaces which was pretty sweet.
The meet and greet started late but it really didn't matter. The Mayday Parade guys are probably the nicest people i've ever met and will ever meet. We went over to Jeremy Lenzo first who we met back in March when they were supporting You Me At Six. As nice as ever, we got him to sign one of the posters for my mum who chickened out of turning up despite the fact she loves them. And in typical Jeremy fashion he wrote her a cheeky message saying "you should have come". Then we saw Alex Garcia who thanked us for coming to which we replied no thank YOU for coming. We also told him to get well soon as he'd picked up the nasty cold going around at the moment. Bloody England. Brooks Betts, who we also met in March, looked ridiculously adorable with all his hair cut off, cowboy boots and hat. I asked him to write his best joke in my 'Peter Rabbit' book and he said he doesn't have any. Nor does he use any pick up lines and he can't draw either so we settled for his favourite song. He may not have a best joke but he still made me laugh. It was much the same with Derek Sanders who we had a chat to about their tour with You Me At Six and then I got him to speak to my mum on the phone who said she was going to lie down because it was a bit surreal (told you she loved them!). Lastly we went to Jake Bundrick who just like the others is super sweet and looked really happy. If Mayday Parade can't make you smile then there really is no hope for you.  Unfortunately, we left my dad in charge of taking the photo's so they're all blurry and awful. We went and stood by the barrier and yelled our goodbyes to Jake who was the last to leave.

Natives were the first band on and they didn't disappoint. Opening with Big Plans they got the crowd going, despite the fact they were playing songs we've never heard from their debut album which has yet to be released. They took their picture of the crowd and gave a spare one to a fan after playing their single This Island. They bounced around the stage and played their hearts out letting us all know exactly who they are and ensuring that as many of us as possible will join them at their headline show at the Clwb Ifor Bach in December.

I didn't want them to finish their set but eventually New Jersey band For The Foxes had to have their go. After meeting Mikey outside I really wanted these guys to be good and boy were they. They had a variety of instruments, including a tambourine, and were having a whole lot of fun up there. To describe their set in 3 words I would say energetic, happy and for slow song River lovely.

Between For The Foxes and The Summer Set, the equipment was changed over and packed away so as Jim Thomas came on stage we frantically waved at him and got a wave back.

Admittedly, I'm not a huge The Summer Set Fan. They have fun, catchy songs and Jess Bowen can drum like crazy.  I saw them back in April with We Are The In Crowd and I wouldn't complain at seeing them live as they bring something to the show that no one else can. They offered everyone a good time and a bouncy set.

Roughly a minute before Mayday Parade were due on stage, Meg decided it would be a good time to pass out and start having a dehydration induced fit. Honestly, I wasn't that concerned as like I said to the scared people around me "It's Megan" back in school it became almost a habit of hers to pass out at the most inconvenient times. She was pulled over the barrier and disappeared off to the medics.

Then the moment we had all been waiting for. The room went dark and on came Mayday Parade. They blasted through the first part of their set which opened with Oh Well, Oh Well followed by Jersey, a song guaranteed to get everyone off their feet. Surprisingly (and luckily) the guys decided to play Three Cheers For Five Years on this tour sending the crowd wild. Playing the first song they ever wrote together was a decision everyone seemed happy about. Half way through their set the keyboard came out and we were treated to heart-breakers Miserable At Best and Stay. The crowd sang along to every word and the smiles on the bands' faces couldn't be shaken. Nor could the crowds' tears. Songs from A Lesson In Romantics such as Black Cat got the crowd yelling along with excitement whilst Self-Titled tracks like When You See My Friends had us all yelling along and crying. They 'finished' with Jamie All Over but of course they came back out for their real last song I'd Hate To Be You When People Find Out What This Song Is About. Mayday Parade know how to work the crowd with a good range of songs and the biggest and cutest smiles on their faces whilst doing it. They move around the stage so everyone can see them and make eye contact which leaves you melted in a puddle on the floor. No one wanted the night to be over, the bands had left everyone speechless, ecstatic and longing for more. The thought of having to wait for them all to come back again is well and truly depressing.

I waited for people to go and then Meg found me. Apparently she didn't miss a song and was about 3 rows back from me the entire time. I saw Alex drop one of his picks earlier in the night so I asked the security person to get it for me and give it to Meg. He asked her if she was all right, laughed at her and then gave a bottle of water. Cheeky sod.
And as a side night Jake has gold sparkly drums. I feel like everything else i've said is irrelevant after saying that.

Don't Panic

October 9th is the official release date for All Time Low's 5th studio album Don't Panic, but in typical All Time Low fashion they couldn't wait until then for us to hear it. Over the past couple of months we've heard 4 tracks from the album - The Reckless And The Brave, For Baltimore, Somewhere In Neverland and Outlines - but then on Tuesday Hopeless Records posted the entire album on their YouTube with a cute animated video to accompany it and the full lyrics to each of the 12 songs.

Produced by Mike Green the album showcases All Time Low at their best. And in Alex Gaskarths' own words  "reflected the best aspects of our previous releases." At this statement you could hear the sigh of relief from Hustlers all round who weren't too impressed with previous album Dirty Work. Which for the record wasn't a bad album, it actually contains some very good songs the main problem was the disjointed feel due to the amount of different people who worked on it. But anyway, this post isn't about that, its about the brilliance that is Don't Panic.

Album opener The Reckless And The Brave starts with vocals declaring "long live the reckless and the brave" and as you get further into the album the more glad you'll be that this is how All Time Low feel about their career. Backseat Serenade the second track features ex Hey Monday vocalist Cassadee Pope providing quietly noticeable harmonies. Outlines features Jason Vena of Acceptance and the heavy punk tune So Long, Soldier features Bayside vocalist Anthony Raneri. If you're a fan that happens to be acquainted with their first album The Party Scene then you'll recognise the tune of So Long, Soldier being incredibly similar to Circles. A clever way perhaps of letting us know that they haven't forgotten who they are after their 9 years in the music industry, particularly chosen due to the fact the song is about "a little boy from just outside of London" who finds "his voice in verse and chorus."

Ultimately, Don't Panic is a brilliant album. It offers catchier "easy on the ears" type songs - The Irony Of Chocking On A Lifesaver, The Reckless And The Brave -  as well heavier songs - So Long Soldier, So Long, And Thanks For All The Booze -  with epic drums and guitar riffs that remind you All Time Low can play their instruments. The vocals are as always excellent and Alex appears to have got in touch with his gruff growling voice on occasion. Don't Panic feels more like All Time Low and flows well as an album with something for everyone.
